Privacy Policy

8 Pages Burnaby (8pb.ca) is an independent online magazine published by BUTENKO ART STUDIO. We collect as little information as possible. There are no user accounts and no advertising. We do use a privacy-friendly, cookieless analytics tool that we host ourselves, and which never identifies you or builds a profile of you. This page explains the few cases where we handle any information at all.

What we collect

By default, almost nothing. You can read the entire site without giving us any personal information. We don't run advertising networks, and we don't use third-party trackers that follow you across other sites.

We only receive personal information in a few situations:

  • If you subscribe to the newsletter — your email address, so we can send you each issue. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link in every email.
  • If you contact us — when you send a message through the contact form or by email, we receive your name, email address, and whatever you write, so we can reply.
  • Server logs — like any website, our web server keeps standard access logs (your IP address, browser type, the pages requested, and the time). We use these only to keep the site secure and running. They are not used to build a profile of you.

Analytics and cookies

We want to know which stories people read and how they find us, so we use a privacy-friendly analytics tool called Umami, which we run on our own server rather than handing your visit to a company like Google.

It is cookieless — it stores nothing on your device and cannot follow you across other websites. It records only aggregate, anonymous information: which pages are viewed, the site that referred you, and general technical details such as approximate country, browser, and device type. It does not store your IP address, and it does not build a profile of you or identify individual readers.

Beyond that, the site uses no advertising or tracking cookies, and no Google Analytics or similar profiling tools. If that ever changes, we will update this page and say so plainly.

How we use your information

We use what little we collect only to:

  • send you the newsletter you asked for,
  • reply to messages you send us,
  • understand, in aggregate, which stories are read and how people find us,
  • keep the site secure and working.

We do not sell your information, and we do not share it for marketing.

Who else is involved

To run the site we rely on a small number of service providers: a company that hosts our server, and (when the newsletter is active) an email-delivery provider that stores subscriber addresses on our behalf. These providers handle data under their own privacy terms and only to provide their service to us. Our analytics is not one of them — it runs on our own server, so your visit is not sent to an outside analytics company.

Some photographs on the site are used under Creative Commons licences or are in the public domain; these are credited under each image. Viewing them does not send your information to those sources.

How long we keep it

  • Newsletter email addresses: until you unsubscribe.
  • Contact messages: as long as needed to handle your inquiry, then deleted.
  • Server logs: rotated and deleted on a regular schedule.
  • Analytics: aggregate, anonymous counts only, with no personal identifiers to delete.

Your rights

Under Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and British Columbia's PIPA, you may ask us to:

  • see what personal information we hold about you,
  • correct it,
  • delete it,
  • withdraw your consent (for example, unsubscribe from the newsletter).

The site is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect information from them.
